Tattoo Aftercare Guide: Some Do's and Don'ts

Tattoos are not just ink on your skin; they are a form of self-expression, art, and individuality. Whether it's your first tattoo or another addition to your collection, proper aftercare is crucial in ensuring your new body art heals beautifully and remains vibrant for years to come. Here are some tips on how to care for your tattoo and keep it looking its best.

Understanding Tattoo Aftercare

The skin is made up of several different layers of tissue, and when we tattoo, we are aiming for the middle, where your normal skin pigment resides.

To put it really roughly, we're jamming particles of pigment into those layers of skin using metal rods, and the process is destructive, requiring some time for the skin to recover. While an open wound, your tattoo is most vulnerable to infection, so take care to avoid rubbing it around in gross so that you don't end up with one of those!

Once sealed in your skin, the pigment particles get attacked by your immune system and white blood cells. The particles are too large to be consumed or destroyed by the white blood cells, so end up locked in place.

These particles break down over time, as do the surrounding skin cells, especially with sun exposure, causing all tattoos to spread and fade over time. How much can depend on how you take care of it.

I've Got a Fresh Tattoo, Now What?

After getting inked, your tattoo artist will cover your new tattoo with a bandage. Once you remove the bandage, it's essential to follow your aftercare routine to promote healing and prevent infections. Here are some key steps:

1. Wash with Mild Soap

Tip : Use a mild, fragrance-free soap like Ivory or Dove to gently wash your tattooed area. Avoid harsh chemicals or rough scrubbing to prevent irritation. Even anti-bacterial/microbial soaps can be too harsh on a fresh tattoo.

2. Moisturize After Cleaning

Tip : Apply a very thin layer of unscented moisturizer to keep your tattoo sealed, hydrated, and to prevent scabbing. Be sure not to over-apply ointment or lotion, as this can cause clogged follicles and pores. It should not look wet or streaky after applying ointment, but a light shine is fine.

You'll want to use ointment the first week or so while the tattoo is still an open wound or just sealed, then switch to lotion after that. Remember to always wash your tattoo thoroughly before applying any new ointment or lotion, but you shouldn't really be doing that more than 2-3 times a day.

3. Avoid Sun Exposure

Tip : Protect your tattoo from the sun's harmful rays by covering it with clothing (best) or applying sunscreen. Sun exposure can fade your tattoo and cause damage to the skin.

SPF 1 is your skin's normal level of protection, and SPF 50 is 50 times your skin's protection. The first 30 days after getting a tattoo, it has zero protection and should really be kept out of direct sunlight to avoid serious damage.

4. Animal Dander is a Danger!

Tip : Animal fur and dander can seriously irritate a fresh tattoo, so be sure to change your sheets, and kick any wild animals out of your bed for a few nights!

Common Tattoo Aftercare Mistakes to Avoid

While caring for your new tattoo, it's essential to steer clear of certain mistakes that could compromise its appearance and health. Here are just a couple common blunders to avoid:

  • Working-Out or Camping Right After Getting a Tattoo : A fresh tattoo needs time to heal. Try and rest for a few days after so that it can properly recover. Heavy sweating/stretching/heat/filth can all have a harsh impact.

  • Don't Re-Bandage Your Tattoo : Your tattoo studio should be a sanitary and clean environment to have your tattoo packaged in it's initial bandage. Once exposed to air, go ahead and clean the area thoroughly, then take care of it as you would. Re-bandaging your tattoo by yourself can be very awkward, especially as kitchens or bathrooms are not normally clean places.

  • Don't Apply Layer on Top of Layer of Ointment/Lotion : Always wash your tattoo before applying any product. You can easily sandwich unsavory things into your tattoo by adding layers on layers, as well as cause zitty outbreaks by clogging your pores.

  • Don't Overwash Your Tattoo : Although washing your tattoo frequently may seem like the best way to keep it clean, washing it more than 2-3 times a day will irritate your tattoo more than help it.

  • Skipping Aftercare Instructions : Ignoring your tattoo artist's aftercare advice can lead to infections or poor healing outcomes. Don't ever hesitate to reach out to your artist if you are having some questions or concerns about your tattoo healing process.

By steering clear of these mistakes and following professional guidance, you can ensure that your new tattoo heals beautifully and maintains its vibrancy over time.

In conclusion, proper tattoo aftercare is key to preserving the quality and longevity of your body art. By incorporating these tips into your routine, you can enjoy a stunning tattoo that reflects your unique style and personality for years to come. Remember, taking care of your tattoo is an investment in preserving your personal canvas.

Whether you're a tattoo enthusiast or a first-time tattoo recipient, following these aftercare guidelines can make a world of difference in how your tattoo looks and feels. Take pride in your ink and treat it with the care and attention it deserves. Your skin is your canvas, and your tattoo is your masterpiece.

So, embrace your new ink and let it shine!

Happy healing, tattoo lovers!
